How To Treat Anxiety

How To Treat Anxiety

How To Treat Anxiety - Anxiety - Able 2 Relate - inf1

Trying to figure out how to treat your anxiety? Well I’ve got good news and bad news for you.  The bad news is: anxiety is not curable.  But don’t let this sorry bit of news make you more anxious.  Because here is the good news:  while not curable, it is treatable.  You can learn how to manage your symptoms and live a happier and more joyful life.

Here are some things you can do to lessen those anxious feelings:

Set the Right Goals

Your goal shouldn’t be to completely wipe anxiety of the face of your earth.   Your way of coping with the stressors in your life is for your body to go into hyper overload.  This is actually a natural human response to stress.  Have you ever heard of fight or flight?  Since the days cavemen roamed the earth our biological systems have developed this pattern to identify and react to danger.  And that is what your body is doing.  Reacting to danger, real or perceived.  Even though dangers in the modern age are not usually life threatening, our minds and bodies react as if it is.  This behavior is ingrained in our biology.  And you can’t fight DNA.  So the goal should not be to eradicate anxiety, but to manage it.  Your goal should be learning how lower the quantity and quality of your anxiety attacks.  Lessening the amount of panic episodes and reducing the symptoms will help you feel more in control of your life, thus reducing these attacks even more.

Learn Cognitive/Behavioral Techniques

Next time you are at your neighborhood diner grab some extra straws and throw them in your purse (or go buy some at the grocery store as I don’t advocate stealing).  When you feel an anxiety attack coming on grab the straw and slowly breath in and out through the small hole of the straw five times.  This technique forces your breathing to slow down, and when you slow your breathing down your heartrate slows with it.  As your heartrate slows other symptoms of anxiety such as rapid heartbeats and shakiness will also lessen.

There are many other techniques that can help you treat your anxiety, along with psychotherapy to help you understand how and when it began and what other issues it may be tied to.  If you live in the metro Detroit area and would like to learn more ways to treat your anxiety call me or fill out the form above and let’s get working to get you to the wonderful life you’ve wished for.
